Westinghouse fresh nuclear fuel for two KhNPP VVER-1000 units is alreadyavailable at the plant site. From now on, all domestic nuclear power plants will utilize American fuel assemblies. They will be loaded into Khmelnytsky NPP reactors this year during scheduled maintenance. Until now, two KhNPP units have been operating on russian fuel purchased even before the full-scale invasion. After February 24, 2022, Energoatom completely ceased cooperation with the aggressor country.
The company has carried out a number of technical works and purchased the necessary equipment to ensure that all Ukrainian VVER-1000 and VVER-440 nuclear power units operate on nuclear fuel manufactured by the U.S. Westinghouse.
Energoatom and Westinghouse have broken russia's monopoly on the nuclear fuel market. In September 2023, the first batch of fuel manufactured by Westinghouse Electric Sweden AB with the participation of NNEGC specialists was loaded into the VVER-440 reactor of the Rivne NPP. Previously, all reactors of this type (which operate across the globe) used exclusively nuclear fuel from russia.
Westinghouse fuel is loaded into Ukrainian VVER-1000 reactors as well.
